Antequera occupies a central position in Málaga province and is the most convenient gateway to Torcal Natural Park, just 8 km to the south. El Torcal is a visually striking karst landscape where hiking trails of different grades wind through limestone formations sculpted by erosion at over 1,200 m altitude. Rock climbing is practised in several sectors of El Torcal and in the Sierra del Valle de Abdalajís, with routes of varying difficulty on good-quality limestone. Horse-riding routes cross the Vega de Antequera through wheat fields, olive groves and historic farmsteads, with views towards the megalithic dolmens listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
About 15 km to the northeast, Laguna de Fuente Piedra is the largest endorheic lagoon on the Iberian Peninsula and the most important breeding site for flamingos in western Europe, with birdwatching routes accessible year-round. Antequera's surroundings combine karst, wetland and farmland within a short radius, making it an ideal base for several days of varied activities.
