Besalú is a medieval town in the Garrotxa region (Girona) preserving one of the finest Romanesque ensembles in Catalonia. Its iconic image is the 12th-century fortified bridge over the River Fluvià, a seven-arch walkway with a toll tower that serves as the monumental entrance to the old town.
The town was capital of the County of Besalú during the early Middle Ages and its legacy is visible on every street: the Sant Pere monastery church (10th century), the Cornellà house (civil Romanesque), the synagogue and the mikveh (a 12th-century Jewish ritual bath, one of only three preserved in Europe). The ensemble is a listed Cultural Heritage Site.
Besalú is also the gateway to volcanic Garrotxa: the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park with its 40 volcanic cones and the Fageda d'en Jordà beech forest is 15 minutes away. The combination of medieval heritage and volcanic landscape is unique on the Iberian Peninsula.
