Castro Urdiales is the easternmost seafaring town in Cantabria, halfway between Santander and Bilbao. Its historic centre, dominated by the Gothic church of Santa María de la Asunción, the castle-lighthouse and the medieval bridge, forms one of the most impressive monumental ensembles on the Cantabrian coast.
The town blends medieval heritage with a living fishing tradition. The harbour remains active and restaurants along the seafront serve fresh fish, fried squid and anchovies. Brazomar beach next to the centre and the wider Ostende beach offer urban swimming with views of the old town.
For active tourism, Castro Urdiales is a starting point for e-bike routes along the coast and nearby mines, cliff hiking towards Oriñón and tandem paragliding flights using the coastal thermals. Its position between Cantabria and the Basque Country makes it an ideal base for exploring both regions.
