Badajoz, the Extremaduran capital on the banks of the Guadiana, combines the natural resources of the dehesa and the river in a setting of open plains and wide horizons. The Guadiana supports a nautical offer with kayaking and canoeing routes from the city centre to more natural upstream sections, where the river flows between poplar stands and wetlands hosting a variety of waterbirds. Proximity to Portugal opens up cross-border trips combining the river with the landscapes of the Alentejo.

The drovers' roads and dehesa tracks around Badajoz are a first-rate resource for long-distance MTB touring and extended horse-riding routes. The Extremaduran dehesa, with its singular ecosystem of holm oaks, pasture and associated fauna —black storks, wintering cranes, Spanish imperial eagles— makes birdwatching a particularly rewarding activity. Around 80 kilometres away, Monfragüe National Park completes the regional offer with one of Europe's most notable concentrations of raptors. The Extremaduran plain also hosts long-distance, low-gradient cycle touring routes along greenways.
Highlights
• Kayaking and canoeing on the Guadiana river with cross-border trips into Portugal
• MTB and cycle touring on greenways and drovers' roads through the Extremaduran dehesa
• Long-distance horse-riding routes through dehesa and holm-oak woodland
• Birdwatching: black storks, wintering cranes and access to Monfragüe NP at 80 km
Best time to visit
Spring (March–May) for dehesa wildlife and flora. November–February for wintering cranes and Monfragüe vultures. Avoid July–August due to extreme Extremaduran heat.
Practical tips
For kayaking on the Guadiana, the most naturally interesting sections are upstream of the Palmas bridge. In summer, set off before 09:00 to avoid the heat. Always carry plenty of water for any outdoor activity.
Several activity companies in the municipality offer single and double kayak rentals and guided routes on the Guadiana. The usual embarkation point is on the riverbank near the historic town centre.
When can you see cranes in Extremadura near Badajoz?
Common cranes arrive on the Extremaduran plains from November to February. Maize fields and flooded areas within 20–30 km of Badajoz gather thousands of birds at dawn and dusk. No guide is needed to watch roost sites from the road.
Can you visit Monfragüe on a day trip from Badajoz?
Yes. Monfragüe is about 80 km away, roughly 1 hour by car. The park has short well-marked trails from the castle and the Salto del Gitano viewpoint. A full day allows you to spot black vultures, griffon vultures and other raptors without difficulty.
