Discover Benidorm

Benidorm is internationally known for its sun and beach tourism, but the natural surroundings also make it a reference point for active tourism on the Costa Blanca. The Parc Natural de Serra Gelada protects a headland and marine islet of high ecological value, where kayaking and snorkelling allow exploration of cliffs, sea caves and posidonia seabeds. The Benidorm Island, reachable by kayak or boat, is the main diving interest in the area. Inland, the Sierra de Aitana reaches 1,558 metres and is the highest point in Alicante province. Its slopes concentrate the best mountain biking and hiking routes in the comarca, with a well-signposted network of tracks and trails. Paramotoring and free-flight activities take advantage of thermals generated by the contrast between mountain and Mediterranean, making Benidorm a departure point for flights with exceptional views.

Highlights

  • • Kayaking and snorkelling in Serra Gelada Natural Park: cliffs, sea caves and posidonia seabeds
  • • Scuba diving at Benidorm Island: one of the highest marine biodiversity points on the Costa Blanca
  • • Mountain biking and hiking on Sierra de Aitana (1,558 m), Alicante province's highest peak
  • • Paragliding and free-flight with Mediterranean views from the mountain summits

Best time to visit

May to October for kayaking, diving and snorkelling. Spring and autumn for Aitana hiking and paragliding. Benidorm's mild winters suit mountain biking and low-altitude hiking routes.

Practical tips

For kayak trips to Serra Gelada, avoid days with Levante wind (easterly); conditions change quickly. Dive centres near Benidorm Island fill up in summer: book 48 hours in advance. For mountain biking on Aitana, the northern sector has the most accessible trails from the coast.

Frequently asked questions sobre Benidorm

Boats from Benidorm harbour reach the island in around 10–15 minutes. Sea kayak access from Levante beach is also possible when sea conditions allow (only in good weather and with sea kayaking experience). Dive centres at the harbour run daily trips to the island for all skill levels.
Yes. The route to Puig Campana (1,410 m) and the ascent of Aitana itself (1,558 m) are the most popular objectives. The most common access to Aitana is from the Collado del Comptador or from Font del Molí. In winter there may be ice on the upper sections; check conditions before heading out.
Spring and autumn are the most stable seasons for paragliding, with well-developed thermals. Summer has intense thermal activity but also turbulence. Tandem flights with an instructor are available year-round; solo free-flying requires certification and is practised in specific zones of the massif.
