Description

The Lower Vinalopo covers the coastal plain south of Alicante, where the River Vinalopo meets the sea among wetlands, salt flats and palm groves. Elche, with its UNESCO Palm Grove and the Misteri d'Elx, is the main city. Santa Pola adds family beaches, the Salt Flats with thousands of flamingos and the ferry to Tabarca Island — Spain's first marine reserve.

Crevillente, at the foot of the sierra of the same name, preserves a rug-making tradition and gives access to the El Hondo wetlands, the Valencian Community's second most important. The area is flat and accessible, ideal for families and birdwatching. Alicante-Elche airport sits at the heart of the district.

The warm climate and variety of landscapes — beach, wetland, palm grove, island — allow nature, culture and gastronomy to be combined over very short distances.
