Description

The Torrevieja Lagoon is one of Europe's largest salt lakes, famous for its intense pink colour caused by the alga Dunaliella salina and the bacterium Halobacterium. The salt works produce over 600,000 tonnes of salt a year. The visual spectacle is most intense between April and September, when high temperatures concentrate the pigments.

A guided tourist train (EUR 8.95) circles the lagoon, explaining the salt industry and the park's biodiversity. Swimming is prohibited. Next to the pink lagoon stretches the La Mata lagoon, a freshwater wetland with birdwatching hides.
