Description

The Elche Palm Grove is Europe's largest and the world's most northerly, with over 200,000 palm trees spread across the city. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it originated from Arab irrigation systems that turned a semi-arid zone into a productive oasis over a thousand years ago.

The jewel of the ensemble is the Huerto del Cura, a botanical garden featuring the Palmera Imperial — a specimen with eight arms, over 165 years old and weighing 10 tonnes. The Parque Municipal offers a large free green space shaded by hundreds of palms, with a playground and duck pond. The Museo del Palmeral explains the history, culture and channel system behind this unique landscape.
