Description

Guisando is a mountain village on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Gredos (Ávila), nestled among ancient chestnut trees, crystal-clear gorges and the highest peaks of the Central System. With barely 500 inhabitants, it preserves the essence of Gredos mountain villages: stone houses with wooden balconies, terraced gardens and an unhurried way of life.

The village is famous for the Bulls of Guisando, four pre-Roman granite sculptures (2nd century BC) on its outskirts, among the oldest vestiges of the Vetton culture on the peninsula. Though now on private land, they are a symbol of the district.

Guisando is a starting point for Sierra de Gredos hiking: the ascent of Almanzor (2,592 m) from Puerto del Peón, the natural pools of the Garganta de Guisando and the monumental chestnut groves. In autumn, chestnut harvesting marks the local calendar.

The village has charming rural accommodation but limited options — book ahead. 1h 45min from Madrid via the A-5 and CL-501.
