Description

A spectacular river canyon where the Sil has carved gorges over 500 metres deep between slopes covered in terraced vineyards. The Ribeira Sacra, a World Heritage candidate, combines landscape, heroic viticulture and Romanesque heritage. Tourist catamarans navigate the canyon from Santo Estevo and Abeleda piers, offering unique views of vertical vineyards, hillside medieval monasteries and granite geology. Viewpoints at Balcones de Madrid, Cividade and Pena do Castelo reveal the canyon depth from above. DO Ribeira Sacra wineries offer tastings of mencía — the native grape grown on impossible slopes where harvest is done by hand with harnesses.

Historical Facts

The Ribeira Sacra owes its name to over 20 Romanesque and pre-Romanesque monasteries dotting its hillsides, founded between the 6th and 12th centuries by monks seeking isolation. Terraced vineyards have been cultivated since Roman times. The DO Ribeira Sacra was created in 1996 and produces mencía wines considered among Galicia's finest reds.
