Description

Context Oviedo Cathedral, known as Sancta Ovetensis, is a landmark of Spanish Gothic architecture and the second most important cathedral in Spain after Toledo. Located in the historic city center, it houses the Holy Chamber with the Holy Shroud, a key piece of religious heritage, and precious relics such as the Cross of the Angels. Beneath its surface lie pre-Romanesque and Romanesque structures, testaments to over a millennium of history. The air carries the fresh scent of ancient stone and wooden cloisters.

The Experience The tour begins with an introduction at the main entrance, followed by a walk through the central nave to admire the Renaissance altarpiece and stained glass windows that filter in colorful light. In the Holy Chamber, you’ll view the Holy Shroud and sacred relics while the guide shares their historical and spiritual significance. You’ll stroll through the Gothic cloister, feeling the texture of stone and wood underfoot, and visit the cathedral museum and crypt. Optionally, climb to the Gothic Tower, where cool air and the distant chime of bells accompany breathtaking panoramic views of Oviedo.

For Whom Ideal for lovers of history, sacred art, and Gothic architecture. The general tour is accessible to most visitors, but the climb to the Gothic Tower requires good physical fitness and is not suitable for young children or people with mobility issues.

Local Context The cathedral is the starting point of the Camino Primitivo de Santiago and a powerful symbol of Oviedo’s identity. The local community continues to preserve its religious and cultural traditions, reflected in its monuments and annual festivals.
