Discover Llanes

Llanes is the easternmost coastal municipality of Asturias, known for its clifftop coastline, blowholes and sandy beaches tucked between rocky headlands. Surfing has a long tradition here, with beaches like Toró and El Sablón receiving consistent waves in autumn and winter. Sea kayaking allows exploration of the coastline from the water, accessing caves and inlets unreachable from land and linking beaches along the eastern Asturian coast. To the south, the municipality borders the Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa, positioning Llanes as one of the most direct coastal access points to the massif. Picos hiking and climbing routes are under an hour from the town, while the nearer Sierra de Cuera has mid-mountain trails with views of the Cantabrian Range and the Cantabrian Sea. Horse riding and mountain biking round out the active tourism offer of one of northern Spain's most visited rural municipalities.

Highlights

  • • Surfing on Llanes beaches: consistent Atlantic waves in autumn and winter with local surf schools
  • • Sea kayaking along the clifftop coast and blowholes of the Llanes shoreline
  • • Hiking and rock climbing in the Picos de Europa less than an hour from the coast
  • • Horse riding in the Sierra de Cuera with views of the Cantabrian Range

Best time to visit

Autumn and winter for surfing (best waves). June to September for sea kayaking, Picos hiking and horse riding. The Cantabrian coast has frequent rain in winter; always carry waterproof gear.

Practical tips

For sea kayaking, the first 3 kilometres of coast east of Llanes concentrate the best blowholes and accessible caves. Book Picos activities several days in advance in summer as guide places sell out quickly. Parking in Llanes village is difficult in August; arrive before 9am.
