At a glance
  • Five castles in two days: Zorita, Sigüenza, Atienza, Molina and Pioz
  • Visigothic ruins of Recópolis, founded in 578 AD
  • Overnight in Sigüenza, medieval town where José Luis Cuerda shot 'Amanece, que no es poco'
  • Unhurried driving on near-empty secondary roads
  • Alcarria honey with DO (since 1991) and cheese from local taverns
  • Digital dossier with GPS route, opening hours, history and food stops

What you'll experience

  1. Zorita, Recópolis and overnight in Sigüenza

Drive from Madrid or Guadalajara to Zorita de los Canes. Visit the castle (Order of Calatrava, 1174) and the Visigothic site of Recópolis (578). Lunch at an Alcarria tavern with DO honey. Afternoon transfer to Sigüenza on secondary roads and a stroll through the medieval town. Dinner and overnight in Sigüenza.

  2. Sigüenza, Atienza and Molina de Aragón

Morning in Sigüenza: castle-parador and cathedral. Up to Atienza, with spectacular views from the tower. On to Molina de Aragón, lunch in the old town and a visit to the castle (one of the largest in Spain). Return in the afternoon, with an optional stop at the castle of Pioz on the way back to Madrid.

Who this fits

With friends Romantic History Local Life Relaxation
It fits if you enjoy unhurried drives on secondary roads, stopping to read information panels, photographing battlements and slow lunches at country inns. It fits couples, friends and families with kids who tolerate medium-length visits. It doesn't fit if you want a live guide throughout (this is self-guided), if you need full accessibility (castles have stairs, uneven floors and steep ramps) or if small museums bore you. Your own car is essential: public transport between these castles is almost non-existent.

Frequently asked

Got a question not listed here? Just ask.

Is it truly self-guided? Is no one with me?
Correct: you drive and visit at your own pace. We send you a digital dossier with the route, opening hours and historical context, and you can consult us before the trip to tailor it. There's no live guide.
Is it good with kids?
Yes, with children who can handle 20-40-minute visits. Recópolis has scale models and panels that help; Molina and Sigüenza are the most spectacular for young eyes.
Do I need to know a lot of history?
No. The dossier provides the necessary context at each stop (Order of Calatrava, frontier with Aragon, Reconquista). If you want to dig deeper, we suggest further reading.
Can I change the order of the castles?
Yes, the dossier lets you start from the north (Molina) if you prefer to leave Sigüenza for the last night, or swap Pioz for another nearby objective.
Is it open year-round?
The route yes, but the castles close on Mondays and run reduced hours in winter. Check before leaving; we confirm hours in the dossier.
