What you'll experience

Leave the bag behind and see the sea

Check-in at the accommodation starting at 15:00. A two-hundred-meter walk to La Salvé to see how the sea is looking and stretch your legs along the promenade. Free afternoon in Laredo: it's a good time to head up to the Puebla Vieja before your body starts to complain.
The first class

Session with the instructor: a brief theory session on the sand, how to lie down, how to paddle, how to stand up, and into the water. Board and wetsuit are provided by the school. The schedule depends on the tide, so it is confirmed a few days in advance. The rest of the day is free, which is much appreciated after the first session.
Repeat, now with the body feeling it

The second class, which is where something usually happens: the body already knows what to expect and the board stops being a hostile object. Departure from the accommodation until 11:00 — we coordinate the class schedule with the departure so they do not overlap.

La Salvé, five kilometers of sand
One of the longest sandy stretches in the Cantabrian Sea and one of the beaches where most people in the north have learned to surf: sandy bottom, long shoreline, and manageable waves when the sea cooperates. It is just 200 meters from your accommodation.
La Puebla Vieja, when the water runs out

The medieval center of Laredo, with its uphill streets leading toward the Santa María de la Asunción church, is just a short stroll from the accommodation. It is the natural plan for Saturday afternoon when you no longer have the strength to row.

The area

Laredo occupies the eastern end of the bay it shares with Santoña, on the coast of Cantabria. Its beach, La Salvé, is a vast stretch of sand that narrows toward the tip of Puntal, right in front of Mount Buciero. Behind the modern beach, the Puebla Vieja survives—the sloping medieval old town that was once a royal port and is now a historic site. It is a town that lives off the sea in two ways: through its fishermen and through those who come to swim.

By car: Laredo is located on the A-8, the Cantabrian highway, with its own exit. It is the most natural way to arrive and the most convenient for getting around the area.

From Bilbao: about 60 km, a little less than an hour.

From Santander: about 50 km, about 40 minutes.

By bus: there is a regular coastal line connecting Laredo with Santander and Bilbao.

Airports: Bilbao and Santander, both less than an hour away by car.

By train: Laredo does not have a station; if you are coming by train, the practical option is to arrive in Santander or Bilbao and continue by bus or rental car.

Adventure Romantic Local Life

It's a great fit if there are two of you and you want to try real surfing, with no previous experience and without buying anything: the school provides the board and wetsuit, and the instructor takes you to a sandy-bottom beach designed for learning. It's also perfect if you're looking for a weekend with something to do in the morning and the rest of the day free. It does NOT fit if you already surf and are looking for advanced waves—this is for beginners. It's also not for you if you expect a hotel with breakfast and room service: this is independent, fully equipped accommodation, and meals are at your own expense. And if you are traveling with small children, this is not the right format: the price is per person in double occupancy and the accommodations are one-bedroom. Oh, and the Cantábrico is cold all year round: you surf with a wetsuit even in August.

Do you need to know how to surf?

No. Both classes are for beginners, and the instructor starts with the basics on the sand before heading into the water. The only requirement is knowing how to swim.

Do I need to bring a board or a wetsuit?

No. Equipment is included in the price: board and wetsuit for both classes. Just bring your swimsuit and a towel.

How much does each accommodation option cost?

All three prices are per person and cover the full weekend, including both nights and both classes: room with a terrace, 195 €; one-bedroom apartment with a kitchen, 215 €; premium apartment with a kitchen, 235 €. The only difference is where you sleep, not the rest of the plan.

Is the price per person or per accommodation?

Per person, in double occupancy, and covers the entire weekend — it is not a price per night. The plan is designed for two.

What time are the classes?

It depends on the tide, so the time is confirmed a few days beforehand with the school, once the sea conditions are known. It is not a fixed schedule that can be finalized months in advance.

Can it be done in winter?

Yes. The school operates all year round—in fact, it organizes a winter championship on this very beach—and surfing is done in wetsuits. Write to us with the dates that interest you and we will confirm them.

Are meals included?

No. The apartments have a kitchen if you prefer to have dinner at home, and the center of Laredo is just a short walk from the accommodation.
