Technical caving in the Asón Valley · 3 nights in Spain’s caving birthplace

Three nights at a base country inn in Ramales for real technical caving: Coventosa as a historic warm-up and Cuevamur HARD as the hard day, with alternatives to Cuivo Mortero (Spain’s longest cave) or cave canyoning in El Molino.

Getaway · 3 nights

At a glance
  • Coventosa: 35 km of technical galleries in the most documented karst system in Spain
  • Cuevamur HARD: serious rappels up to 30 metres and unique formations
  • Technical local guides with decades in the karst system, not beginner instructors
  • Base country inn in a village (not a refuge): you sleep well for the next day

What you'll experience

  1. Team briefing and review

You arrive at the Ramales inn, leave your gear, early dinner in town. At 9 PM: briefing with the technical guide, we verify the group level, and adjust the plan on the spot (which caves we’ll do, in what order, what collective material the guide will carry). If everyone agrees, day 2 goes to Coventosa; if the group has experience and prefers a direct approach, day 2 goes to Cuevamur.

  2. Coventosa, where Spanish speleology was documented.

Six to seven hours inside. Cave with 35 km of galleries, part of the most documented karst system in Spain (first expedition in 1908). Short rappels, extensive stalagmatic formations, conversation with the guide about safety procedures. Exit in the mid-afternoon, quiet dinner at the inn.

  3. Cavemur or advanced alternative

Seven to eight hours inside. The main technical day: Cuevamur with serious rappels of up to 30 meters and unique formations. If the group prefers Cuivo Mortero (the longest cave in Spain) or El Molino (cave canyoning), the decision is made that morning. Closing dinner with a long after-dinner chat.

  4. Long breakfast and return

Quiet breakfast at the inn, time to review group photos. Departure after morning. Anyone wanting to extend with one more optional cave (Cuivo or surface visit to Covalanas) can arrange it as an extra with the guide.

What's included

This is what the bundle covers. If you want to tweak something, we'll sort it in the proposal.

Lodging

  • 3 nights at a base country inn in Ramales de la Victoria, double room + breakfast
A village country inn 5 minutes from the centre of Ramales (the valley head), a comfortable double room for arriving late from the cave, and a hot, hearty breakfast for the next day.

Activities

  • Caving in Coventosa Cave · 35 km of technical galleries
Six to seven hours underground. A historic valley cave, part of the most thoroughly documented karst system in Spain. Short rappels, stalagmite formations, wide galleries. MODERATE level: warms the body up before the hard technical day. If the group arrives at advanced level, it is replaced directly by Cuevamur HARD.
  • Advanced caving in Cuevamur (Ramales)
Seven to eight hours underground. The hard technical piece: serious rappels up to 30 metres, unique formations, irregular floor. HARD level: requires autonomous rappel, endurance and no claustrophobia.

Meals

  • Field meals during explorations
During the Coventosa and Cuevamur events, meals are taken in caves or at the cave entrance: a 6-8 hour technical day doesn’t allow for going down to eat a hot meal. By default, it's a closed and compact energy picnic, easy to carry in a bag.

Extras

  • Welcome technical briefing (Friday night)
On Friday at 8 PM the guide checks the actual level of the group, validates your personal equipment (harness, descender, lanyards, helmet, headlamp) and plans exact schedules and routes for Coventosa and Cuevamur based on the weather forecast and the water level in the Asón karst. If something is not safe, it will be adjusted without discussion at the cave entrance.
  • Collective technical team included
Picuco provides the common progression gear: dynamic and static ropes for rappels, anchors, ladders, spare headlamps and collective safety equipment. You provide your personal gear (overall or wetsuit, helmet, harness, descender, slings, main headlamp). If you are missing anything, let us know at the Friday briefing and the guide will assess local rental options.
  • Sunday technical closing dinner + debriefing
Sunday night, leaving Cuevamur: closing the weekend with a technical debrief from the guide. Sections are reviewed, progression decisions and the actual level of the group for future more demanding outings.
  • Plan B if heavy rain or flooding of the Asón River
Caves like Coventosa or Cuevamur are closed or become more difficult when the karst in Asón is saturated with water. If the 24-hour forecast indicates a rise in water levels, the guide activates plan B with an alternative, drier cave nearby (for example Cualventi or Cullalvera, grade V) or rearranges the order of the days. The decision is made at Friday’s briefing and adjusted each morning.

Included

  • · Qualified technical guide on both caves
  • · Collective gear (ropes, bolts and the guide’s descender)
  • · Caving activity insurance

Not included

  • · Personal gear: oversuit, helmet with light, harness, descender (full list in the briefing)

  • · Personal federation insurance (recommended, not included)

Who this fits

With friends Adventure Disconnection
This package is built for cavers with previous experience (more than ten caves), club members, certified technicians, or anyone with autonomous rappel and endurance. It fits especially well if you want two serious caves in a single trip without changing base, if you value the technical guide who knows every critical knot in the system, and if you prefer a village country inn (with hot food on return) to a caving refuge. It is not for you if you have never been to a technical cave (look at the Asón family package or the base Asón weekend), if you have claustrophobia, severe vertigo, or chronic physical issues (back, joints, cardiorespiratory), or if you want initiation: there is no practice room here, you go straight into the system. If you have doubts about your real level, write to us before booking: we ask for a cave history, a photo of your personal gear, and the technical guide does a 15-minute phone conversation. If the level does not match, we say so honestly and steer you to the base or family-initiation package.

Frequently asked

Got a question not listed here? Just ask.

What level do I need to join?
Previous experience in at least ten technical caves, autonomous rappel at real heights (over fifteen metres), endurance for six to eight hours inside, and no claustrophobia. If you come from a club or hold federation certification, great. If you are not sure, write to us: we ask for cave history and do a 15-minute call with the technical guide.
What personal gear do I bring and what does Picuco provide?
Your personal gear: oversuit or resistant technical clothing, helmet with tested headlamp (plus a spare), harness with foot loop and ascender, descender, two anchor cords, and a safety carabiner. The collective gear (ropes, bolts, the guide’s descender) is brought by the guide. Detailed list in the day 1 briefing.
Is there a beginner option in this package?
No. This package is for people with real experience. If you have never been to a technical cave, look at the `turismo-activo-cantabria-oriental` Hub with beginner caving, or the Asón family package which operates in Cueva El Caracol (suitable from age 5).
Which caves do we do exactly, and who decides?
Day 1 at 9 p.m. there is a briefing with the technical guide to check the real level of the group and adjust the plan. By default: day 2 Coventosa (historic warm-up), day 3 Cuevamur (HARD). If the group is advanced, day 2 can jump straight to Cuevamur. If you prefer Cuivo Mortero (Spain’s longest) or El Molino (cave canyoning), it is decided at the briefing or the morning of.
Where do we sleep?
At a village country inn 5 minutes from the centre of Ramales de la Victoria (the valley head), a double room with hot hearty breakfast. Not a caving refuge: you sleep well for the next day.
What if I have mild claustrophobia?
We advise against it. Cuevamur has narrow sections and prolonged total-darkness stretches that can trigger the sensation. Better to start with a beginner or tourist cave (Covalanas as a visit, not as a technical cave) before attempting this package.
Do I need personal federation insurance?
We recommend it but it is not mandatory: our activity insurance covers the operation. If you hold a federation card, even better; if not, our insurance is enough. The important thing is that the guide knows about prior conditions: flag them when confirming dates.
What is the best time of year for this package?
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are ideal: less surface tourism and stable conditions inside. Winter also works if the group is used to outside cold (the caves keep their temperature). Summer (July-August) has more activity in the village and valley, but the caves are the same.
Can the cave order be customised?
Yes. The day 1 briefing adjusts the order to the real level of the group. If everyone is advanced, day 2 can go straight to Cuevamur. If you prefer Cuivo Mortero or El Molino as the hard cave, it is also swapped. The conversation is closed with the guide on the arrival night.
How long does each cave take?
Coventosa: 6 to 7 hours inside with stops and rest. Cuevamur: 7 to 8 hours inside, including approach, serious rappels and return. Cuivo Mortero: 8 hours (the longest). El Molino: 5 to 6 hours (cave canyoning, more intense because wet). In all cases you return to the inn by sunset.
How do I reach the valley without a car?
There is a daily Alsa bus from Santander and from Bilbao to Ramales de la Victoria (about one hour from either city). The inn is a 5-minute walk from the centre of Ramales. We send up-to-date timetables when you confirm dates.
