Description

The Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark is a UNESCO Global Geopark in southeastern Cáceres, a 2,544 km² territory where geology tells a 600-million-year story. The landscape is dominated by an Appalachian-type syncline — a succession of parallel ridges and narrow valleys visible from the air like wrinkles in the Earth's crust.

The geopark hosts 44 catalogued geosites: Palaeozoic fossils, Roman mines, caves, gorges and unique geological formations. The Castañar de Ibor Cave, with its aragonite speleothems, is one of the most exceptional caves in Europe (access highly restricted for conservation).

At the heart of the geopark, the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe (World Heritage) is one of Extremadura's most impressive monumental ensembles. The town of Guadalupe at its foot preserves traditional architecture with arcades, whitewashed houses and secluded squares.

The geopark's nature includes ancient chestnut groves, cork oak forests, dehesas and rivers with natural pools. Hiking trails connect the geosites, villages and viewpoints. It is an uncrowded area breathing Extremaduran authenticity.
