Description

The Las Herrerías Aqueduct is a hydraulic engineering work about 80 metres long and 10 metres high, with 30 stone arches, located in Campillo de Deleitosa (Cáceres). It is part of the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara UNESCO Global Geopark and one of the most photogenic cultural geosites in the area.

It was built to channel water to a smithy where iron ore from nearby mines was processed. Later, the canal was repurposed to supply three small power stations that served surrounding villages.

The aqueduct sits in a Mediterranean forest setting by the Campillo stream, accessible via a forest track from the village. Vegetation has gradually enveloped parts of the structure, creating a scene where nature and engineering merge. Near the aqueduct are remains of the old smithies and water channels.

The visit can be combined with other Villuercas geosites such as the Ruecas river gorge, the cave paintings at Cueva de Álvarez or the phosphate mines of Logrosán.
