Description

In the northwest of the province of León, the Omaña river flows clean from the Leonese mountains, tracing a peaceful valley of green floodplains, poplar groves, and hay meadows. It is a sparsely traveled inland region, in the transition between the plateaus of the meseta and the first foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains, where the landscape is organized around water: riverine thickets, stone bridges, and villages such as Las Omañas, Riello, or Murias de Paredes that preserve traditional masonry and adobe architecture.

It is a land of extensive livestock farming and a long culture of water: the Omaña and its tributaries are trout rivers highly valued for fishing, and its banks maintain well-preserved gallery forests. Life moves slowly, marked by transhumance, mountain summer pastures, and a gastronomy of stews, cecina, and river trout.

The valley invites slow-paced and outdoor tourism: hiking and mountain biking routes through oak groves, wildlife watching, fishing, and, from the air, a panoramic view of the river winding through meadows with the mountain range in the background. A destination of nature and silence, far from the crowds.
