Description

Valverde de la Vera is one of the most beautiful villages in Extremadura, declared a Historic-Artistic Site. Nestled on the northern slope of the Sierra de Gredos, in the Vera district (Cáceres), its cobblestone streets with "regaderas" — water channels running down the centre of the streets — create a townscape unique in Spain.

Timber-framed houses with wrought-iron balconies, the arcaded square and the 16th-century parish church form an ensemble seemingly frozen in time. Valverde is the best-preserved village in the Vera, without the urban changes that have affected others.

The Vera district is a land of paprika (Denomination of Origin), cherries, crystal-clear mountain gorges and the Monastery of Yuste, where Charles V retired. Valverde is a perfect base for exploring this area on foot, combining the village with swimming in the natural gorges.

Accessible from the A-5 (Madrid-Badajoz), 2h 30min from Madrid and 1h 30min from Cáceres. The village has rural accommodation but is small — book ahead.
