Description

The Castell de Guadalest is a fortress-village perched on a rocky crag in the interior of the Marina Baixa (Alicante), at 595 metres altitude. With barely 200 inhabitants, it is one of the most visited villages in Spain thanks to its spectacular setting: a sheer rock face with the ruins of San José castle on top and the Guadalest reservoir at its feet, an intense turquoise blue.

To reach the old quarter you must pass through a tunnel carved into the rock that opens onto the small castle square. From there, views span the Guadalest valley, reservoir, Sierra de Aitana and, on clear days, the Mediterranean Sea. The village preserves the keep of the Arab castle (11th century) and the church bell tower, which has become the photographic icon of the place.

Guadalest has an unusual concentration of museums for its size: 8 private museums covering everything from nativity scenes and salt shakers to contemporary art and micro-miniatures. The historic quarter features stone houses, craft shops and natural viewpoints.

The reservoir is visible from the village but not accessible for swimming. Water sports and adventure activities are based at companies in the Guadalest Valley (canyoning, kayaking, via ferrata in the Aitana area).
