Description

The Barrancas de Burujón are a natural monument in the province of Toledo: red clay cliffs up to 100 metres high above the turquoise waters of the Castrejón reservoir, on the River Tagus. Known as the "Grand Canyon of Castilla-La Mancha", they are one of the most spectacular and unexpected landscapes in central Spain.

The cliffs stretch along one kilometre, carved by erosion through layers of clay, gypsum and marls millions of years old. The contrast between the vertical reddish walls and the blue reservoir is extraordinary, especially at sunset when the light gilds the barrancas.

There is an accessible viewpoint next to the car park with panoramic views of the ensemble. For the more adventurous, a trail runs along the top of the cliffs (1-2 hours, caution near edges). The area has archaeological value: Bronze Age remains have been found.

The Barrancas are 30 km from Toledo (30 minutes), making them a perfect day trip combinable with a visit to the city. Access is via the CM-4000 towards La Puebla de Montalbán.
