About Cross-Country Skiing
Cross-country skiing (Nordic skiing) is the quietest and most natural way to enjoy the snow. Unlike alpine skiing, it doesn’t rely on mechanical lifts: you glide along prepared pistes or snow-covered trails, propelling yourself with your arms and legs through forests, valleys, and spectacular winter landscapes.
Spain has several cross-country ski centres and stations. The Pyrenees offer the largest variety: Llanos del Hospital (Benasque), Somport-Candanchú, Lles de Cerdanya, and the Valley of Arán. In the Central System, the Navacerrada and Cotos passes provide pistes when conditions allow. Sierra Nevada also features cross-country circuits.
The main disciplines are classic style (walking-like movement, using pre-groomed tracks) and skate skiing (ice-skating style, faster and more technical). Introductory courses teach basic technique in 2–3 hours — most beginners manage to move with ease during their first session.
Cross-country skiing is an excellent cardiovascular activity, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Equipment (lighter and narrower skis than alpine, flexible boots, and poles) is available for hire at the ski centres. The season typically runs from December to March–April, depending on altitude.
