About 4x4 Tours
A 4x4 tour is an off-road vehicle excursion through tracks, forest paths, and unpaved routes. It allows you to reach viewpoints, valleys, and deserts in just a few hours that would take an entire day on foot, and is a comfortable way to traverse terrain for those who do not want to or cannot walk long distances.
There are two formats. In the driven tour, a guide drives the vehicle and explains the surroundings: it is the usual option for families and groups, and the only one possible in many protected areas. In the self-drive tour, each participant drives their own off-road vehicle following the guide, after a brief instruction on low gears, water crossings, and driving on slopes.
The terrain defines the experience. Mountain tracks combine forests, mountain passes, and viewpoints; the sand dunes and dry riverbeds of the southeast offer driving on sand; and volcanic and steppe areas provide very open landscapes. The trips usually last between two hours and a full day, with stops for photography and often a meal along the way.
It is worth knowing that driving on tracks is regulated, and within national and natural parks, only authorized companies can operate and only on permitted routes. A serious tour follows open roads, respects wildlife, and does not create new tracks. It can be practiced all year round, avoiding the peak summer hours in the most arid areas.
