Description

Context The Congost de Mont-rebei is the only Pyrenean gorge untouched by road or dam. The Noguera Ribagorçana river cuts through the Montsec ridge here, carving vertical walls up to 500 metres high within just 2 kilometres of width. In 2001, the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera installed metal walkways anchored directly into the rock to open the most inaccessible sections of the canyon to hikers.

The Experience The standard route combines the Montfalcó Walkways (access from the Aragonese side, Huesca) with the inner Congost de Mont-rebei section (access from La Masieta, Lleida). The full route covers 8-10 km with 463 metres of ascent and 560 metres of descent. Metal walkways — some suspended over the void, others carved into the rock face — link sections that would otherwise be impassable. Highlights include the Colomera Cave inside the gorge, and views over the Canelles reservoir that partially floods the gorge floor.

Pedestrian access is completely free. To reach La Masieta car park (Lleida/Catalonia side) by car, you must book a parking space in advance. The Montfalcó side (Huesca/Aragon) has free parking in Viacamp, no booking required.

Who is it for? Suitable for families with children over 8 in good physical condition. The walkways have side protection, but some bridges cross considerable drops. Not recommended for those with severe vertigo. Dogs on leads are welcome. Trekking footwear recommended (mixed terrain: path, rock, earth).

Local context The Congost de Mont-rebei sits at the heart of Serra del Montsec Natural Park (Lleida) and the Protected Area of Congosto de Olvena (Huesca). The zone hosts one of the Pyrenees' largest griffon vulture colonies, along with Bonelli's eagles, Egyptian vultures and other raptors. Nearest towns: Àger (Lleida, 15 km), Tremp (Lleida, 35 km) and Benabarre (Huesca, 20 km).

Expert Recommendations

Book La Masieta parking several days in advance in spring and summer — it fills up quickly. Start as early as possible in July and August: the gorge has no shade and midday heat is intense. Carry enough water (1.5-2 L per person minimum) and food — no shops or water sources on route. Trekking boots essential. Before heading out, check the current trail status on the official websites.

About the Area

The Congost de Mont-rebei sits on the natural border between Aragon (Huesca) and Catalonia (Lleida), on the Montsec massif. The Aragonese comarca is Ribagorza; the Catalan side is Noguera. The Canelles reservoir (1959) flooded the lower section of the gorge, but the upper canyon remains untouched. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network. The village of Montfalcó — partially restored — and other abandoned hill settlements add historical depth to the landscape.
