Context
The Cerro del Algarrobo via ferrata is located in Montejaque, within the Serranía de Ronda, a natural area known for its striking karst formations and prominent peaks such as the Peñón de Mures. The vertical route ascends 178 meters over a 260-meter path, reaching a maximum elevation of 788 meters. The wind carries the scent of thyme, and the calls of raptors accompany the activity, which runs only from July to December to protect bird nesting seasons.
The Experience
After a 30-minute approach along stone-paved and rocky trails, the guide provides certified safety equipment and reviews essential safety procedures. The route includes two demanding drops that test strength and technical skill, culminating in a 72-meter zip line connecting two rock faces. The rough texture of the rock and the sensation of height combine with panoramic views of the Serranía as you progress.
For Whom
This via ferrata is suitable for individuals with prior experience in climbing or via ferrata, aged 14 and older, and in good physical condition. It is not recommended for beginners, people with severe vertigo, or those with limited mobility due to the technical difficulty and steep access.
Local Context
Montejaque is a white-walled village with historical heritage, including the Church of Santiago el Mayor and the Ermita de la Virgen de la Escarihuela. The area protects raptor species, so the via ferrata closes during winter to respect nesting periods. The local community preserves traditional practices and offers cuisine rooted in the mountainous environment.
