Context
The flight takes off from the Aljarafe, the district overlooking the Guadalquivir valley 20-30 km from Seville, and follows the Guadiamar Green Corridor from the air: the river passage that links the sierra to the marshes and forms the natural gateway to Doñana. It is farmland country — vineyards, olive groves, centuries-old dehesas, sunflowers in season and country estates built over old Roman villas — stitched together by the river that suffered the Aznalcóllar toxic spill in 1998 and is today a restored ecological corridor. Flights go at sunrise, when the wind is steadiest, and always depend on the weather.
The experience
It starts before the sun is up, at the meeting point, from where you are driven to the launch field. You take part in the set-up: the envelope is laid out, inflated with the fans and the burners are lit, and that is when you first feel the heat and hear the roar that tells you this is real. Then come 60 to 90 minutes of an unusual calm, with no engine and no wind in your face, because you travel at the speed of the air. The balloon plays with different heights: low, to pick out the detail of the crops and the river, and high, to take in the whole Aljarafe and, on clear days, the outline of Seville in the distance. After landing, the ground crew collects the group and it is rounded off with a cava toast and a traditional breakfast.
Who it's for
It suits anyone who enjoys landscape and aerial photography and does not mind a genuinely early start. You need to be able to stand for the whole flight and bend your knees on landing. It is not the plan for anyone afraid of heights. Under-18s fly with an adult and each operator sets its own minimum age or height, so it is worth asking beforehand. If anyone has reduced mobility, there are adapted baskets in the area: that also has to be requested when booking.
Local context
The Aljarafe is a short hop from Seville and under an hour from El Rocío and the edge of Doñana, so the flight works well as the first morning of a short break. One important clarification: the balloon does not fly over Doñana National Park, which is protected airspace; what you fly over is the Guadiamar corridor and the Aljarafe countryside, on its doorstep.
What to know before booking
You do not fly over Doñana National Park, and that is not a matter of route but of law: the park is restricted airspace from ground level up to 6,000 feet, with overflight prohibited except for State aircraft and authorised conservation flights. What you fly over is the Guadiamar Green Corridor and the Aljarafe countryside, at the gateway to the park — which is what every operator in the area offers.
The launch field is not fixed: it is chosen the evening before according to the wind and the forecast, always within the Aljarafe, so the exact address is confirmed shortly beforehand. And a balloon cannot be steered, it goes where the air takes it: nor is it known in advance where it will land. That is why there is always a support vehicle following the balloon on the ground, picking up the group wherever it comes down and driving it back to the meeting point.
If the weather does not allow a safe flight, it is cancelled. What happens next depends on the operator and the fare: some offer only a new date until you fly, others refund the money. If you are only going to be in the area for one particular weekend, it is worth confirming which of the two your booking covers before paying for it.
