Description

Bodegas Ponce is a small wine-producing project in Villanueva de la Jara (Cuenca), within D.O. Manchuela, founded in 2005 by Juan Antonio Ponce. The project has played a key role in reshaping the image of the Bobal grape: old vineyards (in some cases over 70 years old), low yields, organic and biodynamic-leaning viticulture, and minimal-intervention winemaking with native yeasts and a search for delicate, fresh reds.

Its wines —notably P.F., Clos Lojen and Estrecha— are in high demand internationally and have placed the Manchuela on the map of fine wine in central Spain. The winery is small and visits are limited; they are arranged directly with the producer.

La Manchuela, between Cuenca and Albacete, is one of the most interesting small wine regions of central Spain: old plots of Bobal, chalky and slate soils, and a small number of high-quality producers.
