San Javier is the Murcia municipality that borders most of the northern shore of the Mar Menor, the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe with 135 km² of surface area and shallow, warm waters for much of the year. This combination of conditions makes San Javier one of the most established water sports destinations on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, with windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddle schools that have been training athletes from across Europe for decades. Kayaking on the calm lagoon waters is suitable for any level.
Outside the water, the salt pans of San Pedro del Pinatar, at the northern tip of the lagoon, are a wetland of international importance where one of Spain's largest flamingo colonies gathers during migration periods. Hiking routes along the coastline and surrounding pine forests offer unique perspectives over the lagoon and the Mediterranean, rounding out an outdoor offer that combines water sports, birdwatching and nature.

Practical tips
For kitesurfing, check the permitted flying zones before launching your kite, as there are restricted sectors within the Mar Menor. For flamingo watching, use binoculars and access the Natural Park viewpoints from the designated car park to avoid disturbing the birds.
