Almonte is a municipality in the province of Huelva whose defining feature is its direct contact with Doñana National Park, the most ecologically valuable protected area on the Iberian Peninsula. The marshes, pine forests and coastal dunes of this territory harbour extraordinary biodiversity: flamingos, Spanish imperial eagles, Iberian lynx and a variety of ducks and waders that make it one of the most significant birdwatching destinations in Europe. Authorised off-road vehicle tours and guided horse-riding excursions cross landscapes of immense ecological value with very few unguided visitors.
Beyond Doñana, Almonte encompasses the Matalascañas coastline with its wide beaches and the Rocío marshes, where kayaking allows quiet exploration of channels and shallow lagoons. Hiking across coastal dune corridors and mountain biking on forest tracks complete the active offering of the municipality. The combination of wild nature, cultural tradition linked to the Rocío pilgrimage and good access from Huelva and Seville makes Almonte a reference destination for ecotourism in western Andalusia.
Highlights
- • Guided 4x4 excursions through the interior of Doñana National Park
- • Birdwatching in the marshes: flamingos, Spanish imperial eagles and Iberian lynx
- • Kayaking through the lagoons and channels of the Rocío marshes
- • Hiking across coastal dunes along the Matalascañas shoreline corridor
Best time to visit
October to May for birdwatching and hiking; summer is hot and Matalascañas beaches become crowded. Avoid the week of the Rocío pilgrimage if seeking quieter conditions.
Practical tips
Bring binoculars of at least 8x42 for birdwatching; they are essential in the marshes. For 4x4 tours inside Doñana, choose local operators accredited by the park. Sun on the dunes is intense even in winter: sunscreen and water are essential.
