Arrival and walk through Potes

Afternoon arrival at the inn after crossing the Hermida Gorge (if coming from the north). Check-in and walk through Potes (5 km): Torre del Infantado, bridges over the Quiviesa, dinner in a village restaurant.
Picos de Cabariezo winery

1-hour guided visit through the vinification room, distillery and tasting of wines plus spirits with pairing. Pick up a bottle or two as a souvenir.
Fuente Dé cable car

4-minute ride up to 1,847 m. Panoramic viewpoint, 20-30 minute walk up top if conditions allow. Descent and lunch in the valley.
Santo Toribio, Potes market and return

Visit to Santo Toribio de Liébana Monastery (free access, Lignum Crucis interpretive panels). Traditional Potes market Monday and Thursday morning. Check-out until noon.

Double room in a small inn (8-15 beds) in Cabariezo, Cabezón de Liébana, Potes or nearby. Stone, wood, valley views. Breakfast with local products.

Cooked-paste cheeses, sobaos pasiegos, local bread and pastries, fruit, cured meats. Coffee or tea. Served at the inn until mid-morning.

Fuente Dé cable car ticket (round-trip)

4-minute climb from Fuente Dé (1,080 m) to El Cable lookout (1,847 m), 753 m vertical. Picos de Europa central massif panorama. Weather permitting.

Guide with times, best routes and practical tips: Potes walk, Monday/Thursday market, access to Santo Toribio Monastery (Lignum Crucis), driving the Hermida Gorge.

With a certified local guide: routes from Fuente Dé (Horcadina de Covarrobres, Hoyo Sin Tierra) or from Pido, 4-7 hours depending on fitness. Bring your own gear (boots, layer, water, food). Book ahead.

Who this fits

With friends Ecotourism Romantic Relaxation Gastronomy

Fits if: you want to mix wine tourism and mountain, enjoy driving small pass roads, value a human-sized artisan winery. Works for couples, small friend groups, travellers curious about spirits (orujo, gin). Adults and families with older children.

Doesn't fit if: you want the Cantabrian coast (1h30 away via mountain road), dislike driving mountain passes (San Glorio, Piedras Luengas with winter tyres), or want resort wine tourism with vinotherapy spa included (see Mainetes in Albacete). Young kids can visit Potes and Fuente Dé but the winery is adult-only.

¿Cuánto dura la visita a Picos de Cabariezo?

Aproximadamente 1 hora: recorrido por la sala de vinificación, destilería con alambiques de cobre y cata. Grupos pequeños, ambiente familiar. Cita previa imprescindible.

¿Qué vinos y destilados se catan?

Suele incluir un tinto Mencía o Syrah, blanco Gewürztraminer o Godello, ginebra premiada y orujos (blanco y café), acompañados de queso lebaniego y embutidos cántabros.

¿Funciona siempre el teleférico de Fuente Dé?

Funciona todo el año salvo cierre por viento fuerte (>60 km/h), nieve intensa o mantenimiento programado (algún día en noviembre). Conviene confirmar la víspera.

¿Puedo añadir una ruta por los Picos?

Sí, lo gestionamos como suplemento con guía local: rutas suaves o medias desde Fuente Dé. Equipo propio (botas, agua, comida). Reserva con antelación.

¿Hace falta neumático de invierno?

Recomendado de diciembre a marzo, especialmente si vais a cruzar San Glorio o Piedras Luengas. La N-621 desde Santander (Desfiladero de la Hermida) es transitable todo el año pero con cadenas en caso de hielo.

¿Hay opciones vegetarianas en las posadas y restaurantes lebaniegos?

Sí, hay que avisar al reservar. La cocina lebaniega es muy de producto local (queso, embutido, garbanzo lebaniego) — los menús vegetarianos se adaptan.
