Description

A 13th-century Templar fortress crowning the Peñíscola headland, residence of Pope Benedict XIII (Pope Luna) during the Western Schism. Stone walls rise above the Mediterranean forming one of the most iconic images on the Castellón coast. The tour visits ribbed-vault halls, the parade ground, the keep tower with 360-degree sea views and the terraces where the pope issued bulls gazing at the horizon. The conclave room preserves its original medieval atmosphere. Summer concerts and open-air theatre are held within the walls. Film location for El Cid with Charlton Heston and Meereen in Game of Thrones. The climb from Peñíscola old town through cobbled streets with whitewashed houses is part of the experience. At sunset, the castle silhouette against the orange sky is the perfect Costa del Azahar postcard.
