Description

Buda Island is the largest island in Catalonia, covering about 1,000 hectares at the eastern tip of the Ebro Delta (Tarragona). It is an ecosystem of rice paddies, lagoons and wetlands that supports extraordinary biodiversity: over 300 bird species including flamingos, herons, cormorants and migratory waders.

The island is privately owned but can be visited on organised boat excursions from Deltebre or Sant Jaume d'Enveja. Tours navigate the delta channels and land on the island for birdwatching and walks through the rice paddies.

Buda is a key birdwatching site in the western Mediterranean: common tern, Audouin's gull and whiskered tern colonies nest here. In flooded rice paddies you can see herons, spoonbills and, in winter, thousands of ducks.

The island is constantly being reshaped by delta dynamics (sedimentation + marine erosion). It is a natural laboratory of how river and sea compete for territory.
