Context
This winter mountaineering course takes place in the Peñalara Massif, the highest peak in the Sierra de Guadarrama at 2,429 meters. This Mediterranean alpine environment offers steep canyons, ridges, and icefalls with inclinations ranging from 35° to 75°, ideal for developing technical alpine skills. Cold winds carry the dry scent of compacted snow, and rapidly changing weather demands constant focus and proper preparation.
The Experience
Over the course of 1 or 2 days, you’ll learn to handle ice axes and crampons, master ice climbing techniques, and practice self-arrest. Under professional guidance, you’ll train on real routes with snow and ice, ascending snowfields and icy ridges while hearing the crunch of ice beneath your boots. The blend of theoretical instruction and hands-on practice prepares you to safely face demanding alpine conditions.
For Whom
This training is suitable for individuals in good physical condition with basic mountain experience, starting from age 10, who wish to begin winter mountaineering. It is not recommended for those unfamiliar with mountain walking, or who have fear of heights or intense cold.
Local Context
The Sierra de Guadarrama National Park protects this high-altitude Mediterranean terrain, where mountain culture coexists with conservation. Signposted trails begin from the Puerto de Navacerrada or Los Llanos, common meeting points for mountaineers and snow enthusiasts.
