  • • The outdoor cave is open-air bathing at the bottom of Spain's longest canyon, rock overhead and the river Deva alongside
  • • The indoor hydrotherapy circuit works just as well in rain or cold
  • • Families use the outdoor cave by day, from three years old; the night session is adults only

Description

The water Three springs rise at 59 degrees at the bottom of the La Hermida gorge, the longest canyon in Spain. It is hyperthermal sodium bicarbonate water, traditionally used for digestion, skin and muscle relaxation, and it reaches the pools at bathing temperature.

Four ways to bathe The outdoor thermal cave is 90 minutes in the open air, in pools set at the foot of the gorge with rock dropping straight down and the river Deva alongside. It takes children from three years old and is the option that works best with family.

The indoor thermal circuit is 80 minutes of hydrotherapy stations, pressure jets, saunas and sensation showers. Being indoors it does not depend on the weather, so it works just as well in rain or cold. From six years old.

The day pass combines both: almost three hours in the water, extendable with a menu at the on-site restaurant or a half-hour massage.

The night cave is the same outdoor area from eleven at night to one in the morning, adults only, with the gorge in complete darkness and only the water lit. Until 30 September there is a session every day except Sundays; the rest of the year, Fridays and Saturdays.

The setting It sits in the village of La Hermida, halfway along the gorge, 21 kilometres and half an hour of winding road from Potes. This is the gateway to the Picos de Europa from the coast, and the same gorge holds via ferratas and canyoning, so it works well to round off a day in the mountains.

Before you go Advance booking is required and capacity is limited in both water areas. To enter the water you need a bathrobe or towel, swimsuit, flip-flops and a swimming cap: the cap is the item most people forget. Bathrobes are rented and caps and flip-flops sold at reception.

Always book ahead: capacity is limited in both water areas and there is no walk-in entry. Bring a swimsuit, flip-flops and a swimming cap from home. The cap is compulsory and the item most people forget; it is sold at reception, as are flip-flops, and bathrobes are rented with a deposit. If you are coming from a via ferrata, the Cares trail or a day in the mountains, save the spa for the afternoon: the hot water does its job exactly when the body asks for it. The night cave is adults only and ends at one in the morning. If you are staying far away, bear in mind that the gorge road is narrow and winding. With children, the option is the outdoor cave by day, which takes them from three years old. The indoor circuit starts at six.

About the Area

The La Hermida gorge is the longest canyon in Spain: eighteen kilometres carved by the river Deva between limestone walls hundreds of metres high, and the natural gateway to the Picos de Europa from the Cantabrian coast. The spa sits halfway along the gorge, in the village of La Hermida, about 21 kilometres and half an hour of winding road from Potes, the main town of Liébana. In the other direction, Panes and the coast at San Vicente de la Barquera are a little over half an hour away. The same gorge holds the El Milar and Escalera al Cielo via ferratas and the Navedo river canyoning. A quarter of an hour away is Lebeña, with its tenth-century Mozarabic church, and beyond it Bejes, the village of Picón cheese. Fuente Dé and its cable car to 1,800 metres lie on the far side of Potes.
