Expert Recommendations
Book La Masieta parking several days in advance in spring and summer — it fills up quickly. Start as early as possible in July and August: the gorge has no shade and midday heat is intense. Carry enough water (1.5-2 L per person minimum) and food — no shops or water sources on route. Trekking boots essential. Before heading out, check the current trail status on the official websites.
About the Area
The Congost de Mont-rebei sits on the natural border between Aragon (Huesca) and Catalonia (Lleida), on the Montsec massif. The Aragonese comarca is Ribagorza; the Catalan side is Noguera. The Canelles reservoir (1959) flooded the lower section of the gorge, but the upper canyon remains untouched. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network. The village of Montfalcó — partially restored — and other abandoned hill settlements add historical depth to the landscape.
