Description

The southern and northern slopes of the Sierra de Gredos —between the provinces of Ávila, Madrid, Toledo and Cáceres— are one of the most interesting wine areas of central Spain in recent decades. The vineyards, on granite soils between 600 and 1,200 m altitude, are largely planted with old-vine Garnacha (in some cases over 70-100 years old). The cool nights, the granitic mineral profile and the work of a small group of producers have placed the area on the map of fine wine in Spain.

The wines are protected mainly by IGP Vinos de la Tierra Sierra de Gredos and parts of D.O. Vinos de Madrid (subzone of San Martín de Valdeiglesias); some producers also work outside the DO. Reference wineries include Comando G, Daniel Landi, Bernabeleva, Marañones, 4 Monos and others.

Visits are by direct enquiry with the producer. The area combines especially well with mountain routes through Gredos and the medieval villages of the southern slope (Pedro Bernardo, Mombeltrán, Cebreros, San Martín de Valdeiglesias).
