Description

The Denomination of Origin Calatayud, in the south of Zaragoza, is one of the references for old-vine Garnacha in Spain. The denomination groups some 30 wineries spread across the comarca, with vineyards on slate, schist and limestone soils between 500 and 1,000 m altitude. The flagship variety is Garnacha tinta, with plots that in many cases are over 50-80 years old, although the area also produces white wines of Macabeo and Malvasía.

A route through the comarca usually combines visits to wineries that work old plots —San Alejandro, El Escocés Volante, Ateca, Bodegas y Viñedos del Jalón, among others— and the option to combine enotourism with the Moorish heritage of Calatayud (castle of Ayyub, mudejar architecture) and the Jalón valley.

Most wineries open with prior booking; offers vary widely (basic visits, tastings of icons of the house, lunches with traditional Aragonese cuisine). Direct connection to Madrid and Zaragoza via the AVE.
