In winter, the Peñalara area and Puerto de los Cotos becomes a destination for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, with elevations that guarantee natural snow from December to March. Mountain biking through the Valsaín pinewoods combines wide forest tracks with technical singletracks, while granite climbing walls across the massif attract climbers from throughout the central plateau.
Highlights
- • High-mountain hiking to Peñalara (2,428 m) through the Guadarrama National Park
- • Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at the Puerto de los Cotos snowfields (December–March)
- • Mountain biking through the Valsaín pinewoods: forest tracks and technical singletracks
- • Rock climbing on granite walls of the Guadarrama massif with routes for all levels
Best time to visit
June to September for high-mountain hiking and climbing. December to March for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Spring and autumn for mountain biking and horse riding in moderate temperatures.
Practical tips
Road access to Puerto de los Cotos can be closed on heavy snow days; check the DGT traffic service before setting out. For climbing, the Los Porrones and La Pedriza sectors have well-equipped routes. For mountain biking, the Valsaín forest is busy on summer weekends: start early.
