Mijas occupies a singular position on the Costa del Sol: the municipality stretches from the shoreline up to the peaks of the Sierra de Mijas, reaching 1,150 metres above sea level. This duality between coast and mountain concentrates in a single territory a diversity of activities that few Málaga towns can match. The GR-243, which traverses the range from end to end, and the network of local trails lead to viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean and the olive groves covering the intermediate slopes.
Parapenting finds in Mijas Pueblo one of the most sought-after launch sites in southern Spain, with consistent thermals and beach landings. The coastline offers excellent conditions for sea kayaking in the rocky coves, and the rocky seabed along the shore is well suited to diving and snorkelling. Horse-riding routes connect the sierra with the historic village of Mijas Pueblo, while the mountain dirt tracks rank among the favourites for MTB cyclists visiting Málaga province.
Highlights
- • Tandem paragliding from Mijas Pueblo with beach landings
- • GR-243 trekking across Sierra de Mijas with Mediterranean views
- • MTB on mountain tracks through olive groves and pine forests
- • Sea kayaking in coastal coves and horse-riding routes
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn for mountain hiking and MTB. Summer for kayaking, diving and paragliding on the coast. Mild winters are well suited to horse-riding routes.
Practical tips
For paragliding, book in advance during peak season (July–August). When mountain biking in the sierra, start early to avoid midday heat; some GR-243 sections have no shade.
