La Pedriza, near Manzanares el Real, has over 2,000 bouldering problems and granite sport routes, making it a national reference for climbers of all levels.
Beyond the mountains, the sierra's reservoirs and rivers support a solid water-sports offer. The Lozoya river offers kayaking through pine forests, while the Atazar reservoir provides calm paddling in a quieter setting. Along the southwest corridor, the Manzanares river runs through the Regional Park of its Middle Course, with cycling and hiking trails less than 30 minutes from central Madrid. Several hot-air balloon operators work out of Colmenar Viejo, flying over the sierra at dawn.
The mountain towns of Navafría, Cercedilla and the north slope of the Puerto de Navacerrada anchor the winter offer: snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and high-mountain routes share the territory with a well-maintained network of mountain refuges. In summer, the 14 municipalities inside the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park open their trails to over 300 km of marked paths. Being 50 minutes by car or by Cercanías train from Atocha station makes this province a natural choice for day trips and weekend getaways alike.

Practical tips
The Sierra de Guadarrama National Park requires prior booking for some trails in peak season (July-August). For La Pedriza, arrive before 9am on weekends: the recreation area car park fills before 10am. If travelling by train to Cotos, book tickets in advance on summer weekends. Hot-air balloon operators confirm flights the evening before; have a backup transport plan ready in case of cancellations.
