San Sebastián is the capital of Gipuzkoa and one of the most complete active tourism destinations in northern Spain, with an offer that combines urban surfing at Zurriola beach with mountain activities on the surrounding hills. La Concha bay, sheltered and with calm waters, is the setting for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, while Monte Igueldo and the Ulía coastal path offer hiking routes with views over the Bay of Biscay. The proximity of the Aiako Harria Natural Park extends the offer towards mountain biking and climbing on the quartzite and granite crags of the massif.
The Gipuzkoa coast, with beaches such as Zurriola, Zarautz or Hendaye, is among the best-known surf spots in Europe. The combination of consistent autumn and winter waves and high-quality school and rental infrastructure make San Sebastián a reference point for surfers of all levels. Hiking routes connecting the Ulia, Urgull and Igueldo hills allow the city to be circumnavigated on foot through Atlantic forest, sea cliffs and viewpoints over the bay.
Highlights
- • Surfing at Zurriola beach: urban waves and surf schools in the heart of San Sebastián
- • Sea kayaking in La Concha bay and coastal routes towards Santa Clara island

- • Mountain biking and climbing in Aiako Harria Natural Park: quartzite and granite on the French border
Best time to visit
Every season has something to offer. Autumn-winter for quality surf waves. Spring-summer for kayaking, hiking and mountain biking in the best weather. July and August are the busiest months in the city.
Practical tips
For surfing, choose a school with FCS-certified instructors; rip currents at Zurriola can be strong for unsupervised beginners. For sea kayaking, always check wind forecast and tides before heading out. Parking in San Sebastián in summer is difficult: use public transport to reach the beaches.
