Castellar de n'Hug is a small municipality in the Berguedà, in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees, located at the headwaters of the Llobregat river. The village marks the eastern end of the Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró, which protects the mountain range with Pedraforca (2,497 m) as its most recognisable summit. The distinctive silhouette of Pedraforca, visible from much of Catalonia, is one of the most sought-after hiking and climbing objectives in the Catalan Pyrenees.
In winter, La Molina ski resort is under 30 minutes by road, but Castellar de n'Hug also offers its own alternatives: snowshoe routes through the Cadí-Moixeró surroundings and high-mountain valleys allow exploration without relying on ski lifts. Mountain bike trails in the Berguedà descend from elevations above 1,800 metres into the valleys, combining technical descents with forest traverses.
Highlights
- • Climbing and hiking on Pedraforca (2,497 m): the iconic mountain of the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees
- • Snowshoeing through Cadí-Moixeró valleys away from ski resort circuits
- • Downhill mountain biking and traverses from elevations above 1,800 m in the Berguedà
- • Llobregat headwaters: the river's source with family hiking routes in the surrounding area
Best time to visit
June to September for hiking and climbing on Pedraforca. December to March for snowshoeing and access to La Molina. Autumn, with woodland colours, is the favourite season for mountain biking.
Practical tips
The access to Pedraforca via Refugi Luis Estasen (1,800 m) is the standard starting point. For downhill mountain biking, several local companies offer vehicle shuttles with bikes to the higher elevations. Castellar de n'Hug is the only northern access to the Cadí-Moixeró on that slope: the road may be closed in winter.
