The village belongs to the municipality of Colunga and was a whaling port in the Middle Ages. Today it maintains its fishing tradition with a small fleet and restaurants serving the day's catch. Steep streets, viewpoints over the Cantabrian Sea and the church of Santa María de Sábada (18th century) complete the tour.
Very close by is the Jurassic Museum of Asturias (MUJA), home to Spain's largest collection of dinosaur replicas, and La Griega beach, where real ichnites (dinosaur footprints) can be seen in the rock. The Dinosaur Coast and the Sierra del Sueve frame Lastres in an exceptional natural setting.
